Princess of Wales bravely consoled cancer patients today in her first solo public engagement in more than a year. Kate travelled to the Royal Marsden hospital in Chelsea to personally thank the staff for their exceptional care, support and compassion over the past year.

The princess finished chemotherapy treatment at the end of last summer, having been diagnosed with the disease in February. Doctors made the secondary diagnosis after she spent two weeks at The London Clinic in Marylebone following abdominal surgery. It was also revealed that Kate will now join the Prince of Wales and become a joint Royal Patron of the Royal Marsden, a role he has held since 2007. As poignantly Kate offers comfort to patients at the hospital, we look at what it's really like inside...

The Royal Marsden is a specialist cancer hospital which first opened its doors in 1851 and continues to work closely with its principal academic partner, the Institute of Cancer Research. It is managed by The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and supported by The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and treats around 50,000 patients each year. As well as having ties to the NHS, the hospital also treats private patients.

As a leading hospital, patients have access to a number of state of the art facilities including those for accessibility. Also available at the main Chelsea site are a garden terrace, The Mulberry Tree Coffee Shop and the Friends' Café. The Princess will no doubt resonate with the hospital's inspirational motto, as it reads: "At The Royal Marsden, we deal with cancer every day so we understand how valuable life is. And when people entrust their lives to us, they have the right to demand the very best.
