Domenico Di Carlo was relieved of his duties as Ascoli manager in unusual circumstances on Friday, sacked on Instagram before he could even return to the dressing room after a defeat. Serie C side Ascoli are without a win in five games and the 2-1 defeat at Lucchese on Friday was the final straw for the club’s hierarchy.
Club president Massimo Pulicinelli posted on Instagram immediately after the final whistle, announcing the dismissal of Di Carlo before the manager had even left the touchline. The post read: ‘Mister Di Carlo sacked! We apologise to our fans! Shameful performance!’.
Di Carlo was still on the field shaking hands with the officials when the announcement was made, only discovering his fate after Pulicinelli’s Insta followers. Later on Friday night the club released an official statement, which read: ‘Ascoli Calcio 1898 FC SpA announces that it has relieved Mr. Domenico Di Carlo of his duties as technical manager of the first team .
‘The black and white club thanks the coach for the work done to date and wishes him the best of luck.’. The loss on Friday left Ascoli 12th in Serie C, clearly a disappointing position for the club president after they were relegated from Serie B last season.
Di Carlo had only taken over as manager in October 2024, replacing caretaker manager Cristian Ledesma who had taken over from Massimo Carrera who was sacked in September. The ousted Ascoli boss is hugely experienced having had stints in charge of a string of clubs in Italy, including Parma, Sampdoria, Chievo, Vicenza and SPAL.
