As temperatures drop, nothing beats a hearty, warming meal to end the day - and Jamie Oliver's 'super simple' creamy gnocchi is just the ticket. The celebrity chef's budget-friendly gnocchi recipe costs a mere 69p per serving, combining peas and bacon in a dish described on his website as "pillowy gnocchi surrounded by oozy, creamy sauce" In a YouTube clip, Jamie said: "I want to share a super easy gnocchi made from scratch, with just potato and flour, served with bacon and peas in a creamy cheesy sauce, coming in at 69 pence a portion.".

He added: "That is a one-pound wonder. Beautiful gnocchi, gorgeous sauce...cheese galore." Thankfully, you don't need to be a culinary whizz to whip up gnocchi - it requires just three simple ingredients and a bit of elbow grease. If you're short on time, there's always the option of grabbing a ready-made pack from the supermarket.

Wash the potatoes then pierce them with a sharp knife and cook in the microwave on high power (800W) for 25 minutes, or until cooked. Once they've cooled down, peel off and throw away the skins, then mash the potatoes on a large clean board using a potato ricer or masher. Season with sea salt and black pepper to taste, then mix the flour into the potato using your hands.

Knead the dough on a surface dusted with flour until it's flexible, then divide it into four equal pieces and roll each one into a sausage about two cm thick. Cut these into three cm lengths, then gently press each piece down the back of a fork or a fine grater to add grooves that will help your sauce stick, or simply shape them into balls.
