All five of the living US presidents have been pictured sitting together while attending Jimmy Carter's funeral. The 39th US president died at the age of 100 on December 29 and a state funeral is being held at the Washington National Cathedral today. President Joe Biden attended the service alongside First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, who sat on the same bench in the front row.

Just behind them were Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and Laura Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Melania Trump. Before the service, President-elect Trump was seen shaking hands with former VP Mike Pence. Trump was also pictured talking with Obama - who attended the service without his wife, Michelle Obama, since she had a scheduling conflict and remained in Hawaii - as Harris entered the cathedral. Bush was also seen engaging in conversation with former VP Dan Quayle in the cathedral. Ahead of their entrances into the cathedral, the former were all together in a private room.

As Carter's casket passed through the cathedral, a number of people on the front rows, including Biden and Clinton, placed their hands over their hearts. Rather than music for a processional, Carter's casket was carried up the central aisle in silence, broken only by a reading that included passages from the New Testament gospel of John and book of Romans. The footsteps from the military pallbearers could be heard as they pivoted to place Carter's casket for the service.
