Ten years after first meeting Prince William, and eight months after she cemented her place in the future King’s life by marrying him, Kate Middleton was officially welcomed into a time honoured festive tradition when she was invited to attend Christmas at Sandringham with the other members of the royal family.
The annual soiree held on the Sandringham Estate featured a host of traditional activities, including an annual Christmas Day church service and delicious dinner, followed by plenty of party games to keep the jovial mood free flowing. Yet one question that weighed heavily on Kate’s mind was what exactly she should purchase for Queen Elizabeth in honour of the occasion.
The Princess of Wales (who was then the Duchess of Cambridge) thought long and hard about what to get for the monarch, before deciding that the best course of action was to gift her something from the heart. Speaking on the 2016 ITV documentary Our Queen at Ninety in honour of the late Queen’s 90th birthday, Kate recalled: “I can remember being at Sandringham for the first time at Christmas. And I was worried what to give the Queen as her Christmas present. I was thinking, ‘Gosh, what should I give her?’”.
The 42 year old opted to gift the Queen a jar of homemade chutney, that had been inspired by an old family recipe used by her own grandparents. “I thought, ‘I’ll make her something,'” explained Kate. “Which could have gone horribly wrong. But I decided to make my granny’s recipe of chutney. I was slightly worried about it, but I noticed the next day that it was on the table. I think such a simple gesture went such a long way for me, and I’ve noticed since she’s done that on lots of occasions, and I think it just shows her thoughtfulness, really, and her care in looking after everybody,” Kate concluded.
