Katie Boulter has crashed out of the Australian Open in the second round after a shock defeat to Russian world No.75 Veronika Kudermetova. British No.1 Boulter, the world No.25, was the favourite to progress but has been unable to join her fellow Briton Emma Raducanu in the third round, with Kudermetova conjuring up a stunning 7-6 2-6 6-2 victory on Court 3.
Boulter was seeded 22nd in the women’s singles – her career-highest seed at a Grand Slam tennis tournament – and was hoping to reach the third round at Melbourne Park for the first time in her career after a stellar 2024. The 28-year-old has failed in that mission, though, and she will now likely throw her support behind future husband Alex de Minaur in the men’s singles with the Aussie set to face Francisco Cerundolo in his next match.
Boulter was among six British players to reach the second round of the Australian Open across both the women’s singles and men’s singles. But only three Brits are left following Boulter’s loss to Kudermetova, with Harriet Dart and Jodie Burrage also dumped out in round two.
Dart suffered defeat to 18th-seed Donna Vekic while Burrage was beaten by American world No.3 Coco Gauff. Jack Draper and Jacob Fearnley are still active in the men’s singles, with the British duo facing Aleksandar Vukic and Alexander Zverev in their third-round matches respectively.
