A No10 spokeswoman said: “The Prime Minister was pleased to host President Trump’s special envoy to the United Kingdom, Mark Burnett, at Downing Street last night, during which he took a call from President Trump and discussed his forthcoming visit to the US.
The UK government has been scrambling to build bridges with the Trump administration after a number of Cabinet ministers made derogatory remarks about the US president, often many years ago.
Trump has said he is going to hit the European Union with tariffs but signalled that the UK may escape the full force of them, though, this may partly depend on whether Washington regards VAT as a tariff.
The Prime Minister has also stressed that Ukraine is on an “irreversible” path to Nato membership, while Washington has emphasied that this will not be part of any peace deal to end the conflict which Putin launched nearly three years ago.
