The mother of a woman who took her own life after a campaign of physical and mental abuse says she's devastated her granddaughter will never know her mum. Angela Dawes' daughter Kiena took her baby to a friend's house in the hours before her death. Leaving a suicide note and the baby's car seat, she left and headed to a railway line. The father of her child, Ryan Wellings, had beaten her so badly just 11 days earlier that she finally agreed for police to press charges, but was devastated when he was released hours later, saying "I spent more time in hospital, than he did behind bars".

Yesterday, Wellings was convicted of assaulting Kiena and for coercive and controlling behaviour, but was cleared of manslaughter Speaking outside court Angela Dawes said she has been looking after Kiena's baby - who was just nine months old when her mum died - since the hours after she was found dead.

She said she had found it “almost impossible to put into words the impact of losing Kiena has been for her family, her beautiful baby girl and all her friends”. She said: “Kiena was glam, she was an extremely beautiful girl, she was totally the sweetest, kindest and gentlest girl I have ever known. Her baby girl was brought to my home a few hours after Kiena was found and has been in my care ever since. I find it hard to put into words how her wonderful baby girl won’t have her mother because of that monster.".
