Liverpool have enjoyed a stunning campaign so far in the Champions League - and are in a dream situation to reach yet another final. The Reds topped the league stage after winning seven out of their eight group games. The only blot on their copy book was Wednesday evening’s defeat at the hands of PSV. Albeit, due to Barcelona’s draw with Atalanta, Liverpool would win the league stage with a place in the last-16 having already been assured. And it has now been confirmed that has allowed them to dodge a number of Europe’s heavy hitters.

After the tournament bracket was confirmed, Liverpool were revealed to be playing any of Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, Monaco or Brest in the next round. All four of those sides face a play-off, and the draw will take place on Friday. Looking further ahead, the bracket for the quarter-finals looks even kinder to Liverpool. They would come up against any of Lille, Aston Villa, Atalanta, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting Lisbon or Club Brugge.

The semi-finals are then far more open and the difficulty would then crank up with Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, AC Milan and Manchester City all waiting. Other candidates include Arsenal, PSV, Feyenoord, Juventus and Celtic - albeit a vast array of those sides could already be eliminated by that time. The one team that they won’t play until the final is La Liga giants Barcelona. The Catalans finished runners-up and as a result are on the opposite side of the bracket.

And while Liverpool could potentially have a kinder run to the semi-finals, Arne Slot has given a warning to anyone getting too confident too soon. Speaking after Wednesday’s defeat to Feyenoord, he said: “It's definitely a good achievement to end up top of this league. Who will win the Champions League this season? It doesn't tell me much, some have faced easier opponents than others but it's always nice if there's a new format and you end up number one.

"But it doesn't give us any assurances for the next round, I see the four teams we can face and especially one of them is definitely one you are hoping not to face if you end up first in a group like this.". The Dutchman added: "At the end it [defeat to PSV] didn't have any effect on the table of the competition and what it meant for the next round. I saw some good things, I saw goals conceded that I'd like to see us do better but I'm sure it's the same for PSV the way they gave goals away.".
