It seems a long way off and unlikely to happen - but what if Liverpool lose all three of their ‘contract trio’ in the summer?. Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all out of contract at the end of the season and deals have yet to be struck with any of the trio. We now know how keen Real Madrid are to sign Alexander-Arnold while Salah has not been shy in reminding everyone that there has been little progress on his deal.
Van Dijk said on Sunday he has “no update” and then Salah posted a cryptic picture of the trio on social media to further ramp up the speculation. What we do know that if Liverpool lose any of the three players then they will be missed for various reasons.
But how would the Reds look if they lost all three? Mirror Football takes a look... Well, this is the most obvious one to predict if the right-back does opt to head to Real Madrid in the summer. Liverpool have a ready-made replacement in Conor Bradley. He can step in whenever needed and showed that this season with a superb performance against Real Madrid.
There’s little doubt that should Alexander-Arnold leave then that will be the obvious replacement. Liverpool will need to dip into the market to find a back-up right-back but financially it wouldn’t be a huge outlay in comparison to finding a first-choice player.
They could go for experience or someone with versatility to play across the back four or maybe a young player from abroad that could be develop at the club. This is trickier because if Alexander-Arnold leaves as well, the Reds would be losing their captain and vice-captain in one window. But the loss of Van Dijk at the back would be a huge blow and would need investment to find a replacement.
