Shoes are the finishing touch to complete any outfit, and loafers are the on-trend footwear staple the fashion firm have been wearing in recent weeks – and we have been converted. Loafers have been coined the “cool girl shoe”, as the preppy style are uber versatile for off duty day time wear, as well as to the office, and evenings out too. When I think of loafers I typically think of them as a smart shoe for the office or formal school option.  But the resurgence of the style has flipped this stereotype on its head. Loafers can still be paired with smart trousers, a dress or skirt, but they can also be styled like those in the 80s with a pair of high waisted straight leg Levi jeans, a white T-shirt, bold knit, and white socks showing.

Alternatively take a leaf out of Hailey Bieber’s style books and layer with a mini skirt, oversize blazer, and socks, even over black tights – my teenage self would have been flabbergasted at the suggestion, but if it’s good enough for the Rhode founder, we’re on board. There are various styles of loafers, from the colour, fabric, to additional detail on the front, so there is bound to be something to suit everyone’s style preferences.

If you are looking for a slightly different take on the loafer, boat shoes with the woven detail around the foot are back in trend, as well as moccasin loafers with the tassel on the top of the shoe. Sumissura has predicted the footwear trend will stay around for some time, as the brand believes cream loafers will be the summer staple to replace the black, chocolate or tan tones of the winter. We have whittled down our personal favourites to help you nail the trend.

Crafted from premium leather, these loafers bring a refined elegance to your footwear collection. The rich burgundy hue is not only a welcome alternative to classic black and brown tones, but means you can tick two fashion trends with one design. The slim silhouette, combined with the soft leather fabric, makes for a flattering, yet comfortable, fit.The minimalist design are ideal for the office, and everyday wear.

Sumissura offers shoppers the chance to create their perfect loafer. The brand prides itself on craftsmanship, with designs made to order.Shoppers can personalise the finish, material, and add additional attachments such as horsebit, or a tassel on the top. Made from durable and high quality calf leather, Sumissura is the place to shop a bespoke pair of loafers. Topshop’s leather loafers feature a subtle ruched detail around the upper section of the shoe, which gives them a gentle textured look, and sets them apart from competitors. The easy slip-on style and flat sole offer all-day comfort, making them perfect for both casual and formal occasions. Available in three colours, including black, cow print, as well as burgundy. Plus, they are more affordable than other designs.

My Instagram Explore page has been filled with content creators wearing these statement loafers. These stunning loafers are a nod to the classic penny loafer design because of the strap detail across the upper section of the shoe. The monochrome contrast, combined with the illustrations, which can vary from cherries or a kiss on the toe, make for a standout footwear staple that will inject character into your wardrobe. The premium craftsmanship and attention to detail make these loafers a luxurious choice for both casual and formal outings. Featuring a structured silhouette and a sturdy sole, they provide long-lasting comfort. They venture on the higher end of the budget, but an investment piece nonetheless you are bound to get complimented on.

The Lillian Leather Penny Loafers are a classic style to complement any outfit.Crafted from a leather rubber and rubber sole, these traditional penny loafers offer comfort, style and versatility. These loafers are available in three colours, including silver, black and brown, though my personal favourite is the latter as they look like a vintage shoe because of the worn leather look. The Dartmoor Moccasin Saddle Loafer from Russell & Bromley exudes luxury and comfort in equal measure. The androgynous look has been made in Italy and crafted from soft leather that is durable, yet sleek. The pinched edging around the upper foot, otherwise known as the saddle trim, is a welcome alternative to ruched edging, and though a subtle detail it makes for a clean finish. Perfect for both professional and casual settings, these loafers will quickly become a go-to in your wardrobe.

& Other Stories are often one step ahead of the curve, and deliver premium designs. Made from soft suede, these loafers feature the classic penny slot detail for a timeless look with a modern twist, and are a refreshing spin on the loafer trend. This design nails two trends in one design as suede fabric has been hugely popular, as well as the footwear style. The flat sole, combined with the ultra soft fabric, ensures a comfortable fit no matter the occasion. In all honesty, these may just be my favourite yet.
