There were three massive updates in the Lucy Letby case today as the lawyer representing the killer nurse held a bombshell press conference. Letby, 34, is currently jailed in HMP Bronzefield in Ashford, Surrey, where she is serving 15 whole-life orders for murdering seven babies and trying to kill seven others while working as a neo-natal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital. She was convicted in August 2023 and was refused permission to appeal against the convictions in May 2024.

However, it emerged on Monday that the legal team acting on her behalf are now seeking permission from the Court of Appeal for a fresh challenge against her convictions. Barrister Mark McDonald said prosecution expert witness Dr Dewi Evans "has now changed his mind on the cause of death of three of the babies". These are babies C, I, and P.

Mr McDonald said: "Dr Evans has also said that he has revised his opinion in relation to Baby C and has written a new report, which he has given to the police. Despite numerous requests, the prosecution has yet to give this report to the defence. The defence will argue that Dr Evans is not a reliable expert, and all the convictions are not safe.".

The defence team has reports from two neonatologists that it claims count as fresh evidence in the cases in relation to Baby C and Baby O. Dr Neil Aiton and Dr Svilena Dimitrova released a statement explaining how they had full access to "the hospital notes, the postmortems, the multiple reports of Dr Evans, as well as other expert witness statements, and the statements submitted as part of the pre-trial investigation" to compile these reports.
