Luke Littler revealed he had to conquer first-night nerves at Alexandra Palace and went on stage thinking: “I don’t want to be here.". The boy wonder of darts overcame a rocky start to finish his 3-1 win against Ryan Meikle with a tournament record 140.91 set average at the Paddy Power PDC World Championship.

But Luke the Nuke, 17, admitted he was almost sparalysed by anxiety and a nation’s expectations. He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “That was probably the most important game I have ever played. All week I was looking forward and excited to play on the stage with no nerves. The train journey down here was fine.

“Then, as soon as I got on that stage, it was like ‘I don’t want to be here.’ In my head, it was tough. But I just dragged myself over the line.”. Littler missed out on a £180,000 jackpot for a nine-darter by a whisker in his turbo-charged final set - which would have earned one lucky punter in the crowd a £60k share of the bonus.

He said: “I have been told a camera had spun round to the fan who was going to win it. I don’t know who he is - I’m sorry!”.
