A horror four-vehicle crash has sparked traffic chaos on the M5 during rush hour this morning, with motorists facing delays to up to 70 minutes. The collision happened near Cribbs Causeway in South Gloucestershire at 6am. Avon and Somerset Police said the crash resulted in a "small" vehicle fire which was put out by the fire service. No injuries have been reported.

The motorway was closed northbound from junction 18 for the M49 to junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway, the police force said. Commuters have faced delays of up to 70 minutes and have been held up from around 6.20am. Traffic is estimated to be around six miles long.

Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: "The M5 is closed northbound between J18A (M49) and J17 (Cribbs Causeway) following a four-vehicle collision that happened at about 6am today (Wednesday 15 January). "Emergency services are at the scene. It's not believed anyone has sustained any serious injury.".

There was also another collision on the M5 this morning as two lorries and a car were involved in a crash on the southbound entry slip road from the Avonmouth Spur at junction 18 for the M49. The incident has since been cleared. Get email updates with the day's biggest stories.
