For a perfect winter getaway that feels like the end of the earth, then this beautiful remote island could be the getaway you’ve been looking for. The Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde, just off the mainland's west coast, is a holiday hotspot that's far from a tourist trap. The 166-square mile (432-square kilometre) island is a hikers' paradise and the gorgeous coastline is home to all kinds of wildlife.
The Isle of Arran is currently bidding for UNESCO Global Geopark status in recognition of its natural geography, and all visitors are encouraged to ditch their cars and instead travel the island on foot, by bicycle or by bus. For people who are excited by history then the six standing stones at Machrie Moor are unmissable. These stones have stood since the Bronze Age and they may even be older than Stonehenge. History buffs can book themselves onto tours of the island which explain its fascinating past.
However if you just want to browse the stones yourself, that’s a great way to spend an afternoon too. Visitors to the stones revealed their experiences on TripAdvisor, saying the trip is beautiful. “Amazing place, to my mind more interesting than Stonehenge due to the many different circles covering a far larger area. Good information boards, and not at all touristy. Hint - proceed past the first circle, there are very many more to be seen,” wrote one person.
