Manchester City fans jokingly chanted "we're staying up" after Savinho gave them the lead in their 2-0 win over Leicester on Sunday. City have been on a woeful run of form in recent months, winning just one of their last 13 games across all competitions ahead of their trip to Leicester. The run has virtually ended City's hopes of winning five Premier League titles in a row and manager Pep Guardiola has been under huge pressure.
However, they picked up a crucial three points against Leicester thanks to goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland. And after Savinho's early strike, some City fans ironically chanted "We're staying up!". The result has eased the pressure on City and Guardiola, who admitted he felt relieved to have earned a win in what was his 500th game in charge. "Our mood is in a better position," he told Sky Sports after the match.
"It was tight in the second half, they were much better. We don't have energy to sustain 90 minutes. Hopefully the New Year can help us bounce back. To get results you have to do something. "To do it in the position we have, many good things happened today. It is not enjoyable right now, it is just relief. We have done incredible things for many years. It is not the best.".
Haaland was also relieved to have found the back of the net, having gone three league games without a goal heading into the match. He told Sky Sports: "Good to win. I'm just happy we are winning. "It is important to look ahead. We have to focus on the right things. It is always a relief when you score. It was an important goal to go 2-0 up. Leicester played really well, we knew it would be difficult.
