Manchester United can still finish just about anywhere between second and 12th in the Europa League table. United travel to Bucharest on Thursday for their final game of this season's league phase. Ruben Amorim's side have an unbeaten record from their seven matches and last week's win over Rangers means their fate is very much in their hands. All 18 matches will kick-off at 8pm to maintain the tournament's integrity. That means that United's position may change several times throughout the night, due to other results.
They currently sit fourth in the table, having claimed 15 points so far thanks to four wins and three draws. Here, Mirror Football looks at what needs to happen for United to finish where. A win would ensure United claimed one of the automatic last 16 spots, as one of the four best teams. They could finish second, third or fourth, though pacesetters Lazio are out of reach. By finishing second, they would ensure they would avoid facing Lazio until the final, should either team get there. For that to happen, they will need both Eintracht Frankfurt and Athletic Bilbao to lose in their games against Roma and Viktoria Plzen respectively.
If Frankfurt and Bilbao both win, United would end up fourth. A draw would also likely be enough for them to finish in the top eight. But this would leave them at the mercy of other results and could see them drop into the play-off spots, in an extreme scenario. HAVE YOUR SAY! How should Manchester United line up against FCSB? Comment below. While a top-eight finish is most likely for United, they could still drop into the play-offs. A loss to FCSB would put them in serious danger of dropping out of the top eight.
Such a result, combined with draws for Lyon and Tottenham, and wins for Anderlecht and Galatasaray would see United drop into the play-offs. They would fall even further in this scenario. Wins for Bodo/Glimt and Olympiacos could see United drop down into 12th place. Placing in the table is key, as the higher up a team is, the potentially 'easier' their knockout opponents will be to face. The play-offs are something United boss Ruben Amorim is desperate to avoid. The 39-year-old has made it clear that he is desperate to claim a top eight finish to be able to benefit from the extra training time he would get.
"It's always important, just the feeling of winning. It's really important when you have the situation of the play-offs. It's massive for us as we can clear one, two weeks without any game in the middle of the week. That is really important in this moment," he said. "Like I've said, the first thing is win the game and we need to improve the performance. We need to see our players perform to understand in each position they are better to play. So we have a lot to improve and we have to use every game and every training to see that.".
