Manchester United pair Manuel Ugarte and Lisandro Martinez clashed with Kai Havertz after Arsenal missed a controversial penalty in their FA Cup encounter. The Red Devils produced an impressive performance on Sunday as they triumphed at the Emirates, eventually coming out on top in a penalty shootout. One of the defining moments of the contest was Altar Bayindir's penalty save from Martin Odegaard.
The Arsenal captain had a golden opportunity to put Arsenal in control in the second-half but couldn't convert from 12 yards as he was denied. Once the ball had been recovered two of United's enforcers took it upon themselves to ruffle up Havertz - the man who won the penalty.
There was some debate over whether it was the correct decision following his clash with Harry Maguire. Later in the game it was the German who would miss the crucial shootout penalty. Ugarte had also physically confronted Havertz just moments before the penalty was taken after a mass brawl broke out between the two sets of players, but it was the visiting team who had the last laugh.
The ex-Chelsea forward had an afternoon to forget. Not only did he miss his penalty but he also fluffed a golden opportunity to put Arsenal ahead from close range as they desperately sought a winner. United's win came a week after they secured an impressive point at Liverpool. Their away day success at the Emirates means they overcame the first hurdle in their attempts to defend the FA Cup they won last season under Erik ten Hag.
Ruben Amorim admitted that Odegaard's miss from the spot was a defining moment, and proved to be inspirational for his side. "It was really important because [it] gives us more strength, and then with less one player, he's really hard to press," he said.
