Pep Guardiola fears Manchester City cannot win the Champions League in their current form after setting up a play-off against European “kings” of Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. City came from a goal behind against Club Brugge, where at half-time they were staring at Champions League elimination, to secure the victory they needed to stay in Europe.

Guardiola will register his January signings, Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, for the play-offs in two weeks, with the City manager admitting their performances mean they deserve the tough groupings when the draw is made in Nyon, Switzerland, on Friday.

When asked whether he could see City winning the tournament, Guardiola said: “Right now, no, but the year that we won I didn’t think it. I’m so pragmatic. “Madrid have been back in the last games and Bayern have had an incredible season with Vinny [Vincent Kompany]. They have more experience than us and. If you had to play tomorrow it would be difficult but in two weeks I don’t know the position we will be in and the players. The players in the locker room said Bayern or Real – it’s OK, we will be fit and see what happens.”.

The tournament’s new format means City know Bayer Leverkusen or Atlético Madrid wait in the last 16 if they progress past the Champions League play-offs. “We deserve it,” he said. “I don’t know if they are happy to play against us but it is what it is. No complaints. We’re going to face them – one is the king of the competition, the other is the second or third king.
