Mark Williams felt like his luck was out in a dramatic 6-5 defeat to Ding Junhui at the Masters on Monday afternoon, with Ken Doherty saying he will ‘probably feel robbed’ by the result. The eye-catching first round tie started pretty slowly, with both men struggling to find form, but that all changed after the interval and it turned into a brilliant contest.

Williams made a 136 to level the match at 4-4, but looked to be going behind when Ding missed a simple black on 66. The Welshman ended up winning the frame by a single point. At 5-4 ahead and after that superb steal, Williams was in command, but Ding got away with missed pots on more than one occasion, being very fortunate to leave his opponent in tricky positions after his own mistakes.

The Chinese superstar ultimately took advantage of his good fortune, making breaks of 76 and 90 in the last two frames to win the match, but Williams was feeling hard done by. ‘I don’t normally say this but I think the only reason I lost today was the run of the ball,’ Williams told Eurosport. ‘He had so much run all the way through the match really.

‘I’ve had it myself in the past but that was as much run of the ball for a long time that someone’s had against me. I was 5-4 up, he’s butchered a long red, smashed them everywhere and I’m on nothing. Last frame he’s butchered one again, left me in trouble and cleared up again.’.
