Weird and wonderful food is one of the most popular subjects on social media – barely a day goes by when we aren’t watching someone hold an amazing bagel up to camera or reveal the little-known product they’ve discovered that we simply must taste.

It’s not just hipster bakeries in East London that are producing viral moments; good old Marks & Spencer has got in on the act too, with a number of foods that have had shoppers take to social media in 2024. But which products have caused the biggest stir online?.

White strawberries were a winter hit. You might think the most appealing thing about strawberries is their vibrant red colour, but apparently shoppers quite fancy a ghostly white strawberry come wintertime. M&S brought its white pearl strawberries back by popular demand in January of this year, and sold over 266,000 packs during the season. The brand’s social media post announcing the fruit’s return had over 1.6million views.

Em the Nutritionist shows viewers her cottage cheese recipe. Once associated with Nineties diets, cottage cheese has had a reboot thanks to TikTok, with Gen Z rediscovering it and posting endless recipes. M&S collaborated with Em the Nutritionist on a hot honey and cottage cheese toast recipe, which was viewed by 4.3million people. There was also a 65 per-cent uplift in cottage cheese sales. Looks like it has well and truly made a comeback to our lunch plates.

M&S launched its new loaded dips this summer. Apparently girls love having ‘picky bits’ for dinner – hence the social media obsession with a #girldinner in all its snacky glory. Whether or not you prescribe to this slightly reductive notion, you still probably love a good dip – and M&S had lots of success with its newly-launched dips this summer. In fact, TikTok posts about the new Caesar dip gained over 3.1 million views, causing 23,000 dips to be sold in one week (that’s five every minute).
