McDonald's customers have been left outraged over a change it has made to a popular menu item. The fast food chain has switched its plastic hot drink lids to an eco-friendly paper version in an attempt to cut down on its plastic use. While most customers support its attempt to 'save the planet', they believe they've made changes in the wrong places - and it could be costing them customers. One upset customer said on X: "Can't stand these new lids. Surely you can find plastic lids that can be recycled? Same as the stupid paper straws that go soggy in 10 minutes.".

Sharing a video with drink spilled down their front, another user said: "Right McDonald's, sort your hot drink lids out please. Had enough of them getting soggy and falling off, ruining my clothes!" A third said: "McDonald's new lids that just pop off the cup resulting in black Americano in the crotch and scalded nuts.".

One more user said: "New paper lids at McDonald's. After four or five, you can taste the cardboard. As if this coffee wasn't borderline anyway." Another user said: "Treated myself to a McDonald's breakfast. Yes these new coffee cup lids are awful. Even the lass that served me hates them".

As part of their mission to 'close the loop on waste', McDonald's aims to create a circular system where its packaging and waste has a second life. A statement reads: "We believe that the future of materials is circular and that we need to close the loop on waste. Our goal is to make sure that, by 2027, McDonald’s restaurant waste is given a second life so that nothing is truly wasted – instead it is recycled, reused or composted.
