McDonald's fans have been left fuming after the fast food chain made a major change to its coffee cups. Restaurants across the UK are now serving coffee, tea, and hot chocolate in cups with eco-friendly lids that, some customers complain, lose their structural integrity when they come in contact with hot beverages.

It appears the new sustainable lids are being used at McDonald's outlets across the UK as part of the firm's 2030 pledge to 'close the loop on waste' and ultimately reduce the amount of material used across packaging by 30 per cent. So far, the fast food giant appears to have achieved its 2024 goal for all of its primary customer packaging to be made recyclable or compostable, which explains the recent switchover to paper-based straws and cutlery, as well as plastic-free salad boxes.

However, some customers have taken to social media to complain about the 'awful' new lids that collapse while they are still drinking their beverage. Writing on X, one person said: 'Can't stand these new lids. Surely you can find plastic lids that can be recycled?.

'Same as the stupid paper straws that go soggy in 10 minutes.'. Another said: 'After my recent moaning about McDonald’s cup lids, I’m conflicted as to whether this is better or worse than the plastic ones that split every time.'. McDonald's restaurants across the UK are now serving coffee, tea and hot chocolate in cups with eco-friendly lids - but the move has not gone down well with regular customers.
