McDonald’s fans missing cult menu item can now get their fix at rival chain

It’s been a pretty good few weeks to be a fast food fan in the UK. From McDonald’s unveiling a surprise collab with Stormzy, to KFC announcing the return of its ‘holy grail’ burger (the Double Down), and Nando’s bringing back a fan-favourite item as well, it’s fair to say we’ve been thoroughly spoiled. And the exciting launches just keep on coming, as Wendy’s revealed it’s adding two brand new items to its menu, for the very first time.
Fans of the US chain can now get their hands on Halloumi Fries (£2.99 for three pieces), which are described as being ‘crispy and golden on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside’. Wendy’s claim the new side dish is ‘irresistible’ and ‘heavenly’ and taste best when paired with a sweet chilli dipping sauce. And from February 18 customers will also be able to order Mini Doughnuts (£1.99 for six), dusted in sugar and cinnamon.
The sweet treat reportedly tastes great with any of the chain’s hot espresso drinks, but Hayley Kianoff, the manager of international culinary innovation at Wendy’s says: ‘I love to have them with a Vanilla Frosty-ccino.’. She added: ‘At Wendy’s, we’re constantly innovating and creating new menu items based on what our fans want. Whether you’re in the mood for a savoury snack or a nostalgic sweet treat, our Halloumi Fries and Mini Doughnuts are the perfect excuse to treat yourself.’.
Wendy’s customers have been going wild over the new halloumi fries on social media proclaiming them a ‘need’ and ‘so goddamn good’ in comments on Instagram. ‘Halloumi is life,’ proclaimed @comedinewithkerrie, as @hivedeck wrote: ‘yummy’. And the launch has caught the attention of Maccies fans, who have been desperate for halloumi fries to return to the menu there. McDonald’s first launched halloumi fries in the UK in summer 2022, and they returned three years in a row before being axed in April 2024.
As such, those who miss the cult product are overjoyedrival Wendy’s, to fill the void the discontinued product left behind – even if it is at a rival chain. @uk_king_andy_black_fan admitted: ‘Got my attention! McDonald’s did these once, loved them never came back… I guess I’ll be giving all my money to Wendy’s instead cuz I love these f***ers so much that I know I’ll love Wendy’s even more.’.
Similarly, the new product had @jac_jackson1 admitting they thought Wendy’s was ‘10x better than McDonald’s’. In addition to these two new items, Wendy’s also recently launched a brand new £2.99 deal for customers, allowing them to enjoy menu favourites for a very low price. Wendy’s fans can now get either the Spicy Chicken Sandwich or the Dave’s Single burger for £2.99 until March 2, in-store or through the Wendy’s app.
For those who aren’t familiar with the chain, Wendy’s, has been a staple of American fast food since November 1969 when Dave Thomas opened his very first restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. The burger giant is well known for its unique square-shaped beef patties, and the iconic Frosty dessert, which is somewhere between an ice cream and a milkshake. Wendy’s has been cropping up all over the UK over the last few years, since making its triumphant return to Reading in 2021.
There are now 37 restaurants across the UK. Here’s a look at the full list of locations:.
