Two men charged with assaulting a police officer at Manchester Airport have appeared in court. Last July, footage from the airport went viral which appeared to show a Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officer kicking and stamping on the head of a man lying on the ground.
An Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation was launched into the officer’s actions. Since then two men, Mohammed Fahir Amaaz and Muhammed Amaad, have been charged following the altercation at the airport’s Terminal Two. It led on from an earlier confrontation between passengers on a Qatar Airways flight, which touched down at 7.20pm on July 23 last year.
A female officer suffered a broken nose and two other officers were hospitalised following the fracas, GMP said previously. Amaaz, 20, of Rochdale, is alleged to have assaulted two officers, one male and one female, causing actual bodily harm. He is also said to have assaulted another female officer.
Amaad, 25, also from Rochdale, is accused of assaulting a male officer, causing actual bodily harm in the same incident. They both appeared at Liverpool magistrates court this morning, and neither gave an indication of how they will plead to the charges.
