Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal will only look to sign a player capable of making an immediate impact in the January transfer window. The Gunners host Manchester United in the FA Cup third round on Sunday afternoon. But there remains an intense focus on whether Arsenal can strengthen their squad this month and maintain pressure on Premier League leaders Liverpool.
Arteta has conceded that the current squad has “limitations” and “gaps” that need to be covered. Yet he is unsure of how much can be done this month because a premium is always placed on fees mid-season. "Someone that can impact the team immediately with the performance and bring something that we don't have,” he said.
“That can be really hard in this market. We always have discussions about how we can improve the team. “The circumstances changed because we've had some injuries to some top players, but it has to be someone who can make a difference. “We have certain limitations and we have lots of gaps and things you have to cover. It's also about the players and whether you can afford them.”.
Arteta also spoke highly of Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim ahead of their meeting and he is expecting a tough test against the holders in a competition that Arsenal are desperate to win. "Look at how they perform against the big teams and how they perform and the results they got,” Arteta said of United. "I know him well, I followed him in Portugal and there is a big reason why he is where he is at the moment and he deserves to be there.
