Mikel Arteta blasted Brazilian music in training to try ‘trigger something’ in his Arsenal team as they look to close in on a Champions League last-16 spot against Dinamo Zagreb tonight. Hit tracks Mas Que Nada and Take Me Out to the Ball Game were played from boombox-style speakers at their London Colney base.

The ploy comes after the Gunners squandered a two-goal lead to Aston Villa in the Premier League last weekend to draw 2-2. The north London club are aiming for a top-eight finish in the Champions League table, which would guarantee passage to the round of 16 while avoiding a two-legged play-off.

Victory on Wednesday would put Arsenal in a prime position to secure a top-eight spot against Girona next week. It is not the first time the Spaniard has used music to psyche up his players in training. Arteta blasted Merseyside anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ during a training session prior to the Gunners taking on Liverpool in November 2021 — a game they were beaten 4-0 in.

To build the energy, to change some purposes we want in the training session and the players enjoy it. ‘Music is very much part of our culture. We have music in a lot of different places, and I think music has the capacity to change your mood, to change your energy to a certain place. And I think it happens in all of us.
