Mohamed Salah broke yet more new ground with a brilliant performance in Liverpool’s thumping win over West Ham. Liverpool thrashed the Hammers 5-0 on Sunday evening to put them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League with a game in-hand going into the New Year. Although there were five different goal scorers at the London Stadium, there was one clear star as Salah added another goal to his tally as well as two assists.

Luis Diaz scored from close range to make it 1-0 before Salah teed up Cody Gakpo to double their lead. Salah beat Alphonse Areola at the near post to put Liverpool in charge before the break and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected strike and Diogo Jota’s finish, from another Salah pass, wrapped up the scoring.

Salah now has 30 goal involvements in 18 Premier League games this season – 17 goals and 13 assists, which, unsurprisingly, is the fastest any player has reached that tally in a single campaign. His two assists on Sunday moved him onto 82 in the Premier League altogether, 10th on the all-time list. Significantly, in terms of Liverpool history, he is now within touching distance of the club’s former midfielders James Milner (89) and Steven Gerrard (92). Remarkably, he has taken just 281 games to do so – way fewer than Milner’s 637 and Gerrard’s 504, although it should be noted that they played in deeper positions.

The 31-year-old forward has now both scored and assisted in eight different Premier League games this season – another feat that has never been done before, and he is only midway through the campaign. After such a dazzling performance, the question on every Liverpool supporter’s lips is whether he will stay to continue his staggering form beyond this season, with his current contract due to expire in June.
