You can't have a Christmas dinner without first pulling open a Christmas cracker - but parents have been warned this year to "remain vigilant" when letting children join in the fun. If you've already laid your dining table ready for your Christmas dinner, then you might have also carefully placed a cracker at each seat. These crackers are traditionally pulled before the meal so that you can adorn your head with the tiny paper hat before tucking into your turkey. Not to mention the cheesy joke and the - often rubbish - novelty item that brings a bit of humour to the afternoon meal.

But one mum has said there's a danger to using Christmas crackers that most of us don't think about. If you've got small children who will be opening up the crackers, then you might want to watch them carefully while they do it - as parts of the cracker could pose a serious health risk.

Cynthia Ewers-Cobb, founder of Green Eco Lifestyle, is a sustainability blogger and devoted mum and has said that parents should "remain vigilant" this festive season if they're planning on allowing their young children to pull Christmas crackers. She pointed out that the novelty items inside are often small and can, therefore, be choking hazards, especially to children aged three and under.

=She urged parents to "supervise" their children when pulling crackers and said they should "actively participate" to ensure they can quickly remove any small pieces before they become a hazard. The mum added: "It's important to have fun but remain vigilant during the festive season, especially with presents and Christmas crackers. The small toys enclosed in crackers pose a potential choking hazard for young children (three and under). It's essential you supervise your child when they are pulling the crackers as an extra safety measure. Make sure you are actively participating in the cracker-pulling with your child so you can avoid any potential risks.".
