'My knees had no cartilage and I was in constant pain – I'm now tennis' oldest pro player' Rohan Bopanna has revealed that he was on the verge of hanging up his racket in 2019 due to excruciating knee pain caused by a lack of cartilage.
With a storied career in doubles tennis spanning over two decades, the 44-year-old tennis pro from Bangalore has notched up an impressive record of 504 wins and 367 losses, along with 26 career titles and two Grand Slam victories.
However, Bopanna's journey to this point was almost cut short in 2019 when he considered retirement due to debilitating knee pain.
His first Grand Slam win came in 2017, when he clinched the mixed doubles title at the French Open - teaming up with Gabriela Dabrowski to overcome Anna-Lena Gronefeld and Robert Farah in a nail-biting final that ended 2-6, 6-2, 12-10.
Bopanna added another Grand Slam to his tally at the 2024 Australian Open, partnering with Matthew Ebden to defeat Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori 7-6, 7-5 in the final.
