Most of us wouldn't think twice before helping out a neighbour – within reason, of course. Whether it's lending a few teabags in a time of need or retrieving something that's accidentally ended up in your garden, community spirit tends to win the day. Being neighbourly is just part and parcel of communal living; you don't have to be best pals with next door, but being on friendly terms sure doesn't hurt, nor does keeping a lid on noise levels or stopping those late-night laundry sessions.

But one man was left gobsmacked when faced with his neighbours' audacious demand – they had the cheek to ask for access to his Wi-Fi without spending a penny. They brazenly rocked up at his doorstep, claiming they'd "forgotten" to foot their own internet bill, resulting in a disconnection, and demanded they be given the password to his router instead.

In a post on Reddit, he said: "I had a neighbour knock on my door, asking if they could connect to my Wi-Fi claiming they 'forgot' to pay their bill, and their internet got cut off. I politely declined, explaining that I pay for a service enough to cover my needs and don't want to risk security issues.".

He thought the disagreement with his neighbour was over, but it escalated when they started badmouthing him around the neighbourhood. His neighbour branded him "cheap" and "selfish", accusing him of lacking community spirit. He recounted: "They got upset and left, but I thought that was the end of it. Turns out, they've been bad-mouthing me to other neighbours, saying I'm selfish and lack a sense of community. A friendly neighbour told me they were calling me 'cheap' and claiming it wouldn't cost me anything to help out.".
