Summary at a Glance

It comes after French president Emmanuel Macron suggested a truce in the Ukraine war could be weeks away after talks in Washington with US president Donald Trump.

But the US president has also made it clear he thinks European countries need to spend more on defence - with the issue likely to surface when Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer flies to Washington to meet with President Trump on Thursday.

Mr Trump suggested it will be Europe that “make[s] sure nothing happens” when it comes to security, after he said that Vladimir Putin would be happy to see peacekeeping forces on the ground in the event of a deal being struck to end the war.

The transatlantic alliance on the conflict has been shaken in recent weeks by the President’s comments on Ukraine and attempts to secure a deal with Russia over Ukraine’s head.

All of Ukraine was under air raid alerts starting at around 0350 GMT after the country's air force warned of a Russian missile attack which forced Nato-member neighbouring Poland to scramble aircraft to ensure air safety.
