Nestle will be scrapping its vegan KitKat from its product range in Europe after a huge fall in demand. The vegan version of the popular snack - called KitKat V - was first launched in 2021. However, just four years later, the plant-based alternative will be discontinued across Europe over the next few weeks. The product will continue to be sold in the UK until the summer. The bar, crafted with rice-based milk alternatives and made using 100% certified sustainable cocoa, aimed to replicate the original KitKat experience while reducing its environmental impact. The vegan version of the product has a carbon footprint 18% lower than its original counterpart. According to a Nestle spokesperson, the decision to axe the product is due to declining sales, with the move being a huge blow to the plant-based confectionery market.

A Nestlé spokesperson said: “We know that KitKat Vegan has been popular for those looking for dairy or vegan alternatives. Unfortunately, global demand has been reducing to the point that production was making manufacturing more and more complex and we have now made the difficult decision to discontinue the product. We know there will be some disappointment, however it will still be available in the UK and Ireland until the summer.”.

Nestlé acknowledged that the vegan chocolate segment remains a niche market, with traditional chocolate products continuing to dominate consumer preferences. The spokesperson added: “Our emphasis with the KitKat brand for the foreseeable future will be on classic chocolate variants, as they continue to be the preferred choice among consumers.". Fans of the chocolate product took to social media to share their frustration on the news. In the Vegan Food UK Facebook group on person said: “No! You are just cruel! It’s one of the only nice-tasting vegan chocolate products that my daughter can eat without an allergic reaction. We’ve been paying your overinflated prices for a long while, and now you’re taking that little bit of pleasure away from her and so many thousands of others.”.

On X - formerly Twitter - another person posted: "Can't believe the vegan KitKat has been discontinued. This is devastating". In response, another said: "What?? I liked it more than the regular KitKat". A third person shared: "Nah the vegan KitKat is being discontinued?! why are we going backwards.". You can still bulk-buy them on Amazon and stock up before they're discontinued. They sell 24 of the 4 finger bars for £29.90 or 6 bars for £8.99.
