The Mexican film Emilia Pérez has been hit with harsh reviews from fans, who have labelled it 'the worst movie ever'. Despite receiving an impressive 13 Oscar nominations and being praised in Hollywood, the film has faced a barrage of criticism on social media. Before the awards season, the Netflix musical-thriller had received mixed reviews since its release last year. Even with a star-studded cast including Adriana Paz, Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon - the latter making Oscar history as the first openly transgender actress to receive a nomination - fans were not won over by the film.
After the Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, fans expressed their dismay on social media at the numerous nods the film received. Comments included: "Emilia Perez getting an editing nomination over dune or challengers. I can't even wrap my head around it getting THIRTEEN #Oscars nominations. Quite possibly the worst movie ever (mid-scores from audiences & critics) to get double digit nominations.".
Another echoed: "Baffling. It was one of the worst films I've ever wasted my time watching." Someone else fumed: "Emilia Perez and Oppenheimer having the same amount of oscar nominations is wild. This years best picture Oscar nominees just might be the nail in the Oscar coffin." While another disgruntled move fan added: "I've never seen a worse batch of movies to be nominated.... Nothing to cheer for. Just wow.".
Stars Karla and Zoe were nominated for best lead actress and best supporting actress respectively, but Selena did not receive a nomination. The film has garnered a plethora of nominations, including best picture, best international feature film, best director, best adapted screenplay, best film editing, best sound, best cinematography, best makeup and hairstyling, best original score and two nods for best original song.
