The new year is getting off to a chilly start as a three-day yellow weather warning for snow is put in place over the weekend. The Met Office warns of potential school closures, power cuts, road closures and transport delays caused by the snow. The yellow warning is in place from 12pm on Saturday until 9am on Monday and it covers almost all of England, most of Wales, and parts of southern Scotland.
About 5cm of snow is expected widely across the Midlands, Wales and northern England, with as much as 20-30cm over high ground in Wales and/or the Pennines, the forecaster added. But despite the widespread warning, meteorologist Tom Morgan said this doesn’t necessarily mean everywhere covered by it will definitely see the white stuff.
‘It’s just a heads-up there could be some impacts,’ he explained. ‘It’s definitely going to start off as snow in many places but it’s a question of how quickly that snow melts and turns back to rain, it’s more likely that the snow won’t last that long in southern England.
‘It’s quite likely the warning will be updated quite frequently between now and the weekend. ‘Certainly if you’ve got travel plans on Sunday and perhaps Monday stay tuned into the forecast.’. Meanwhile, more than 170 flood warnings are in place as England, Scotland and Wales are have been lashed with rain throughout New Year’s Day.
