A fresh Spanish series, one of the first from Apple TV+, is set to stream this week and could be a surprise hit for those who enjoy edgy comedy. The plot revolves around two individuals from contrasting backgrounds grappling with life-altering changes, whose relationship seems destined to fail after they cross paths at a funeral. The seven-part series, premiering on Wednesday, 5th February, is the brainchild of Dani de la Orden, renowned in Spain for films like Casa en flames (A House on Fire) and Loco por ella (Crazy About Her), as well as penning episodes of Netflix's Elite.

The story sees Raúl (played by Joan Amargós), a straight-laced individual diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain cancer, while Marta (Verónica Echegui), a party-loving marketing genius, finds out she's pregnant. Despite Raúl's recent heartbreak and Marta's perpetually single status, their connection is palpable. But can they make it work?. This hilarious series boasts some of the finest comedic writing in recent times and is sure to resonate with rom-com enthusiasts, even those watching with subtitles.

In an exclusive interview with Express Online, creator de la Orden revealed: "I decided to make a romantic-comedy but the producers said 'Okay, but it has to have something special'", reports the Express. He added, "We came up with the idea of a couple who are born to be away from each other because they're from two opposite worlds. "They have met in the worst time of their life. She has to decide if she wants to be a mother or not, and he is afraid of an operation to get better from cancer.".

De la Orden cited influences from popular UK and US comedies, but assured that Love You To Death also packs a punch with its heartfelt moments. "That mix of characters makes the comedy so funny and so special," de la Orden added. "All of us have seen Fleabag, Bridesmaids, that kind of humour. A little bit irreverent, satirical, but it also mixes with the drama. "The magic of the comedy is, if it comes with a big drama at the beginning, the comedy is going to work better.".

The script, penned by Oriol Capel and Natalia Durán, was the starting point for the show, with the director constantly pushing for more humour. Lead actors Amargós and Echegui were both pleasantly surprised and impressed by the show's direction. Amargós shared: "We're used to getting scripts that are a little bit predictable, or obvious, where things happen and develop as they should. But this is a little bit more chaotic and sometimes laughter appears in a cemetery or something!".

Echegui echoed his sentiments, saying: "It was such a gift, it's not that common to find these kinds of scripts in which you have everything there all together. "Dani is very well-known here in Spain, so it was such a great challenge but also a gift.". Don't miss out on this week's uproarious new treat from Spain.
