New details have emerged about a New Year's Day terrorist attack in New Orleans, where a man planted IEDs around the city before ploughing a vehicle into a crowd of people, killing at least 15. Authorities have described the perpetrator of the killing spree as “100 per cent inspired by ISIS.”.

The FBI stated in their latest press conference that their investigation still supports the theory that 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar acted alone, admitting they found no evidence of an accomplice in the US, but are investigating potential overseas connections. Investigators revealed fresh information about Jabbar's whereabouts before the attack, as well as his use of high-tech glasses in the days before.

Lyonel Myrthil, the special agent in charge of the New Orleans Field Office, revealed that Jabbar travelled to Cairo, Egypt, from June 22 to July 3, 2023, and shortly after flew to Ontario, Canada, before returning to the US. FBI Agents are investigating who he met during these trips and how they may be connected to the attack, which also left more than 30 people injured.

Jabbar also visited New Orleans twice in the two months prior to the attack, according to Myrthil. Authorities reported that Jabbar used Meta glasses to record as he drove around the French Quarter, with eerie footage showing the suspect surveiling parts of the city.

He was wearing the glasses during the attack, but was not live streaming, reports the Mirror US. The FBI also said that surveillance footage had captured Jabbar placing his first IED in a cooler at 12.53am on the night of the attack. A bystander moved the cooler a block away, then at 2.20am, roughly an hour before the victims were attacked, Jabbar placed a second IED.
