People are just discovering a hidden section of their air fryers that looks filthy - and they're horrified. Air fryers are versatile gadgets, capable of everything from crisping up frozen food and baking sweet treats to reheating leftovers and cooking a full Sunday roast.
The popular appliance comes in all shapes and sizes and is marketed as an energy-saving alternative to traditional ovens. Money saving aside, air fryers also simplify and speed up the cooking process and generally provide a healthier way of cooking lots of your favourite foods.
But, in order to keep your air fryer operating smoothly, you'll need to keep to a cleaning and maintenance routine, with experts recommending cleaning the basket after every use. While this is a pretty straightforward process, there's another, hidden area within the air fryer that people are just learning about. Posting to TikTok, @sarahlifestyleandfood shared a video in which they removed the basket and looked at the top of their air fryer, also known as the heating element.
They wrote: "Do I pretend I didn't notice the absolute state of the top of my air fryer or have an absolute meltdown?" In the caption, they continued: "Off to B&M to buy every single bit of cleaning equipment I can find to clean this beast. I'm so upset.".
People in the comments section were equally taken aback, with one writing: "Omg! Stop it! I noticed mine this afternoon! Knocked me sick." Another commented: "It's why I got rid of mine. I couldn't get that top part clean and it absolutely smelt rotten every time I switched it on," while a third said: "This is my sign to not check what mine looks like, what I don't know can't hurt me.".
