Pesto, with its rich and nutty flavour, is a must-have in many kitchens. It's a simple yet tasty mix of pine nuts, basil, olive oil, parmesan and garlic that can be added to pasta, eggs, salads, sandwiches and more. Whether you've picked up a jar from the supermarket or made your own at home, it's always good to have some on hand. However, once opened, the countdown begins to use it before it goes mouldy. Thanks to its fresh ingredients, this can happen quite quickly - but there's a handy storage tip that can extend its shelf life for months. Typically, an opened jar of supermarket pesto will last about five days in the fridge.

But if you've made a large batch of pesto and don't plan to use it all immediately, or if you don't think you'll get through a whole jar of the store-bought variety, then this clever trick is for you. It can keep pesto fresh for up to six months, ensuring you always have some ready for your meals. The experts at The Kitchn recommend freezing your pesto to make it last as long as possible. Using an ice cube tray makes it easy to take out of the freezer when needed, reports the Express.

This method is especially useful if you're planning to make a pasta dish with pesto, or want to add some to meat or fish dishes. To do this, simply spoon the pesto into a clean ice cube tray and add a small amount of olive oil on top of each cube. Then, just freeze for a couple of hours or overnight until it's completely solid. Take the cubes out and add them to a plastic sandwich bag, labelled with the contents and date, and keep in the freezer. How long can you freeze pesto for?.
