Brits would rather celebrate major news with a slice of pizza than a glass of bubbly, according to new research. Some 78% say they celebrate good news by sharing the Italian-originating triangle snack with friends and family and 69% say it is their go-to meal if they want to make a weeknight feel special. The research by Goodfellas also found three quarters of 2,000 adults polled said sharing a pizza with someone special makes them feel even closer.

Of those asked, 63% said they associate the cheesy slices with comfort. Apparently, they would rather eat it at home however as 72% would rather eat it at home than go out for a pizza, while 81% admitted having some in the freezer. In the run up to National Pizza Day on February 9, Goodfella’s is hosting free pizza parties across the UK and has taken over Goodison Park in Liverpool, Good Road in Poole, the coastal town of Goodwick in Wales and Goodtrees Garden in Edinburgh. Goodfella’s spokesperson Claire Hoyle said: “While 72% of Brits say they prefer to enjoy pizza at home with family or friends, nearly a quarter (20%) share pizza weekly, and 65% are likely to bring it to a gathering.

“This tour is all about celebrating those connections, and we can’t wait to finish it in style at ‘Gooooodge Street.’”. Last month Beatles legend Ringo Starr confirmed rumours he has never eaten pizza or curry in his entire life. Appearing on the Jimmy Kimmel Show in the US , he was asked if it was true he had never eaten a slice, he shocked the New York crowd by saying: "I have never had a pizza. All the people in the back are going 'what?'. Or a curry.

"I'm allergic to several items and pizza, you dunno what they're putting in it half the time or the curry. So I am pretty strict with myself because it makes me ill immediately.". Ringo was appearing on the TV show to promote his new country album, Look Up, and host Jimmy even gave him a cowboy hat with a Sergeant Pepper theme. Ringo has been playing live shows with his new songs in Nashville and he also found time to discuss his recent gig with Paul McCartney .
