As the winter chill sets in, many of us are cranking up the heating to full blast. Yet, we often find ourselves waiting ages for our rooms to get cosy. A savvy plumber from Your Plumber has stepped up with a top tip to help you "channel the warmth" into your room quicker, potentially saving you precious time and cash.
To boost your heating's effectiveness, the pro first suggests clearing any obstructions from your radiators. If you have heavy furniture such as couches in front of them, these could be hogging your heat. To "channel the warmth into the room", the plumber suggests: "put shelves above any radiators to stop wasted hot air rising." They've also offered a simple hack you can try, which is to "cover a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators." This easy home improvement will "reflect the heat back into the room" making it warm up faster and stay heated longer.
It's also vital to bleed your radiators to get "rid of air pockets". To check if bleeding is needed, feel each radiator to make sure it warms up uniformly, not just at the base. Mark Ingram from Engineering Real Results (ERR) has issued a heads-up to homeowners about the chilly days ahead: "As time goes on and the temperatures get cooler the demand will only get higher and people may find they have to wait days for an engineer to become available to fix their problem.".
He advised on a DIY tip for cold radiators: "If when you touch all of the radiators you notice any cold spots, you might need to bleed air out of the system, which is an easy job people can do themselves." He issued a warning: "With bigger concerns, you should always seek advice from a registered Gas Safe engineer.".
