A hit period drama starring award-winning Sean Bean has been axed after only one series. Shardlake focuses on the dissolution of the monasteries during the Tudor era. As shown in the synopsis, Matthew Shardlake (played by Arthur Hughes) is sent by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the death of a commissioner in a small town called Scarnsea. The murder mystery had rave reviews but it wasn't enough for them to secure a second series on Disney+.

The series is based on historical books by CJ Sansom. There are seven novels in the series so fans were hoping they got to see more of the drama. Anthony Boyle, who played Jack Barak, took to social media to share the sad news of the end of the series, writing: "Sadly Shardlake won’t be coming back from another season.

"Thanks for all the love and support on it. First season still on Disney Plus UK." A Disney spokesperson also confirmed that there won't be a second series. In a statement to Variety, they said: "We’d like to thank Stephen Butchard who adapted the late C.J. Sansom’s beloved novel for the screen, the entire cast – led by the outstanding Arthur Hughes – and crew, and our production partners The Forge and Runaway Fridge.

"We hope to work with all of our partners across these shows again in the future." Fans were devastated by the news and rushed to social media to share their outrage. One person wrote: "ReallY gutted to hear the news #shardlake won’t be returning for a 2nd second. What a missed opportunity. Great cast and fantastic books. Disappointed.".
