France-bound travellers should not miss a visit to Annecy, often dubbed the 'Alpine Venice' due to its intricate network of canals crisscrossing the city. Nestled less than an hour from the Swiss border, Annecy sits on the northern bank of Lake Annecy, named after the city itself. The picturesque city has been hailed as 'unmissable' by travel influencer Jamie Hughes, who shares his adventures under the moniker Jay Goes Global.
In a series of videos documenting his recent trip to this French version of Venice, Jamie revealed that he flew into Geneva airport, conveniently located less than an hour away from Annecy. Other accessible airports include Chamberry and Lyon, albeit they are approximately an hour and twenty minutes away.
In another video, Jamie shared his top picks in Annecy, starting with the city's old town, the medieval heart of the city. Known as the 'five bell towers district', it boasts five church bells housed in the Basilica of the Visitation Order, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Liesse, the Church of Saint-Maurice, the Church of Saint-François de Sales and the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre.
Another must-see is the Palais de l'Ile, a charming medieval castle and former prison situated in the middle of the Thiou Canal, now functioning as an art and history museum. Jamie also suggests heading straight to the Pont des Amours, a pedestrian iron bridge offering stunning views of Lake Annecy.
For those keen on a leisurely stroll or bike ride during their Annecy visit, Jamie suggests the Promenade du Thiou. This route is rated as 'easy' on AllTrails, so even if you're not an avid walker back home, you can still clock up your steps while on holiday.
