Ronan Keating has very emotionally opened up about the moment he and his Boyzone bandmates heard of the death of group member Stephen Gately. Stephen tragically died in his home in Mallorca, Spain on October 10, 2009, with his sudden death occurring at the age of just 33. While the group frequently honours their late friend with touching social media posts to honour his life, they’ve spoken more about Stephen in the upcoming Sky three-part documentary, Boyzone: No Matter What.

In one scene from the series - which will air on February 2 - Ronan recalled the moment he heard the news of Stephen, who he and the band call ‘Steo.’ Sadly, it fell on him to pass the information along to the rest of Boyzone and their manager Louis Walsh.

“My phone rang, it was a solicitor by the name of Gerald King that Boyzone had used in the 90s. Gerald Keen says to me, ‘I’m sorry to tell you, but Stephen has passed away.’ I said, ‘Stephen who?’ And he said, ‘Stephen Gately.’ I had to call Louis and the guys and give them the news,” he shared, with his voice breaking as he relived the memory.

Shane Lynch added: “It was late, in the bar we’re drinking. As I left the crowd, Ro’s voice became louder in my phone. He was like, ‘Steo, Steo, he’s gone.’”. “‘Our Stephen?’ ‘Yeah he’s gone,’ Mikey Graham recalled, as Keith Duffy shared: “It just wouldn’t go in. What? No, not our Stephen!”.
