Ronnie O’Sullivan wishes he hadn’t unleashed a rant on Ali Carter after their Masters final last year, but says his comments were just ‘heat of the moment stuff’. The Rocket beat the Captain 10-7 in the Alexandra Palace final 12 months ago, extending his own record to eight Masters titles.
Carter had led 6-3 but the seven-time world champion came back strongly in the second half of the match and got his hands on the trophy yet again. It was a fairly ill-tempered affair between the old rivals and both had their say after the match. Carter told reporters that O’Sullivan had been ‘snotting all over the floor’ during the match, calling it ‘outrageous behaviour’ from the champion.
Responding to the claim from the Captain, the Rocket let loose, starting a rant by saying: ‘He needs to sort his f***ing life out. I’m not going to skirt around it anymore, tip-toeing on egg shells around someone like that. He’s a f***ing nightmare.’.
A year removed from those comments, O’Sullivan regrets losing his cool, but also dismissed the situation as a flash in the pan and said the words from both men mean little. ‘It’s just heat of the moment stuff,’ said O’Sullivan. ‘If I feel like I’ve got to say something I’ll say it.
‘It’s nothing personal, just heat of the moment stuff. He’s entitled to say what he’s got to say, like I am. ‘Do I regret saying it? Probably. I wish I’d kept my mouth shut and been a bit more polished with my answers, a bit more diplomatic. But I’ve said what I’ve said and that’s fine.
