Ruben Amorim shot down a reporter who questioned his lack of progress at Manchester United compared to Wolves' new manager – but Alan Shearer backed up the Red Devils head coach. The Portuguese suffered another damaging defeat on Boxing Day when his side fell to a 2-0 defeat away to Wolves. It marks the Red Devils' fourth league defeat already since his arrival in Manchester just last month.
The struggling Premier League giants now sit a lowly 14th in the table. And even more alarmingly, they are just eight points above the relegation zone with 18 games played. During Amorim's post-match press conference, he was questioned regarding United's lack of positive results under him while 17th-placed Wolves have pulled off two wins in a row from new boss Vitor Pereira's first games in charge at Leicester and at home to United.
The journalist asked the 39-year-old: "I know you said you don't know how long it will take but Wolves have just had a new manager in for a week with a new system – with your players, what do you think is missing?". "New system?" the surprised ex-Sporting CP boss immediately replied, before asking: "Wolves are playing a new system? They play the same system.
"Vitor Pereira worked the same system in Saudi Arabia. It was the same system, the same position. This squad was built for that system.". While his team is still trying to adapt to the big change in style at Old Trafford, Amorim admitted the importance of successfully selling his project to his players. He continued: "But don't worry, I'm saying that we have to improve a lot of things. We have to win games, sell the idea to the players. If not, this is really hard, but Wolves are in a completely different situation.".
