Ruben Amorim has made it clear he needs his Manchester United players to improve their running stats if they want to achieve anything - and he'll now get help from the best in the business. The Red Devils have been unable to enjoy any new manager bounce since the ex-Sporting Lisbon boss was hired but he's bought in a new face off the pitch to help in one of the areas he feels the team can enjoy significant improvements.
Athletics guru Harry Marra has come on board following a stellar career in athletics. He is regarded as one of the best coaches in the world in his field after guiding Ashton Eaton to two Olympic decathlon titles in 2012 and 2016. Its understood that Amorim has noted fears about body-fat levels with some players and he hopes Marra can help bring their fitness up to scratch.
It also backs up Amorim's claim at the end of last year, where he claimed the names of the team sheet were irrelevant if they did not work hard off the ball. His 3-4-3 system requires players, especially those operating on the flanks, to continually get up and down the pitch.
“Even with the best starting XI on the planet, without running, they will not win anything,” Amorim said about his players in December. “It’s very clear. If you want to win the Premier League, you have to run like mad dogs. If not, we are not going to do it, that is clear.”.
In recent years only Manchester City and Liverpool have claimed the Premier League title. Both teams earning continued plaudits for how their players worked both in and out of possession. Pep Guardiola has been renowned for making top players clock up huge miles during games.
