Ruben Amorim's shown what he'll do next after axing Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho

Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho have futures at Manchester United despite being left out of the win over Manchester City. That's according to the Match of the Day 2 panel, who heaped praise on Ruben Amorim after his level-headed post-match interview on Sunday. United snatched victory from the jaws of defeat courtesy of two late goals to seal a 2-1 win - their first at the Etihad Stadium since March 2021 - with Amad playing a central role in the dramatic turnaround.
The 22-year-old won a penalty, which was converted by Bruno Fernandes, then grabbed a last-gasp winner to hand Pep Guardiola's side their eighth defeat in 11 games. Amorim raised plenty of eyebrows by leaving both Rashford and Garnacho out of the squad entirely, casting doubt over their long-term futures at Old Trafford.
However, his comments after the game suggest the duo will be given an opportunity to work their way back into his good books. "Next week, next game, new life," he told reporters. "They [Rashford and Garnacho] are fighting for their places but for me it's important, the performance in training, the performance in game, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with team-mates, the way you push your team-mates. Everything is important when we want to change a lot of things.
"They have to fight for a place in the team and today the team proved we can leave anyone out of the squad and manage to win if you play together.". Earlier, in what appeared to be a reference to recently-axed sporting director Dan Ashworth, as well as wider redundancies at Old Trafford, Amorim stressed: "When people in the club are losing their jobs, we have to push our standards really high.".
