Scarlett Vickers' dad has been pictured for the first time in a mugshot taken just hours after the "devastated" dad killed his own daughter in a "playfight". Simon Vickers, 50, was found guilty today of murdering his 14-year-old daughter following what he claimed was an accident in the kitchen at their family home in Darlington. He claimed to have accidentally moved the knife that killed his daughter with a pair of tongs before it plunged into her heart.
Prosecutors, using testimony from pathologists, argued it would not have been possible to stab the teenager were the knife not being held in Vickers' hands at the time. Jurors have since agreed he was responsible for her murder after they were asked to conclude whether he "deliberately armed himself" and "attacked his daughter".
Mark McKone KC, prosecuting, said that Vickers loved his daughter and he was “devastated” by her death, adding the jury would have sympathy for the family. His mugshot, released following the jurors' decision today, shows the downcast dad staring dead-eyed into the camera, reflecting the "life sentence" his defending lawyers say he and his partner have received.
In his closing speech to the jury delivered last week, Nicholas Lumley KC reminded jurors the teen was "supported at every turn by her mother and father", and that Scarlett's mum referred to the tight-knit trio as the three S’s. On the day she died, Mr McKone said Vickers had smoked cannabis and had been drinking wine, adding he may have become irritated as they "played" in the kitchen.
