An eight-year-old girl has died after her coat got caught in a car door in a freak accident while she was being dropped off at school. Serenity Campos was leaving the car just a few feet from Gateway Elementary in Borger, Texas at around 8am on Friday when she suddenly became trapped. Police said a senior member of school staff tried to give her life-saving first aid after she suffered serious injuries, and officers and paramedics were called to the scene. She was rushed to Golden Plains Community Hospital in an ambulance, where she died.
Children were sent home at 10am, according to the Borger Independent School District Facebook page. Officials said counselling would be available at the school to pupils and any affected members of the community. A Gofundme page set up to support her parents has now raised more than $76,000 (£60,900) of its $75,000 (£60,100) target. A message on the fundraising page says: "It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic loss of Serenity Campos, a beautiful little girl who passed away unexpectedly this morning. Daniela and Daniel Campos, her loving parents, are now faced with the unimaginable grief of losing their daughter while also caring for their three other children.
"As they navigate this heartbreaking time, the family is also faced with the financial burden of funeral expenses and daily needs. We are asking for your support to help ease some of these burdens, allowing them to focus on grieving and healing together as a family.".
Police offered their condolences and said the incident happened "so quickly it could not be stopped". A spokesperson from Borger Police Department said: "Despite the presence of a senior school administrator who immediately attempted to intervene, the incident happened so quickly that it could not be stopped. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this horrible accident as they navigate this devastating loss. The entire community grieves alongside them.
